Tips to get you growing Upward!

  1. Getting Started
    • Start small. Many tend to overestimate the amount of time and care a garden needs. Something to think about is how much time you are willing to invest in your garden. Nicole Burke, a founder of Gardenary estimates that it takes about 1.5 minutes per square foot a week to maintain a garden. Another good idea would be to choose low-maintenance plants or flowers. Top annuals for sun would include Petunias, Verbena, Geraniums, and Calibrachoa. For annual shade would include Begonias, Caladium, Impatiens, and Turenia. These are just some ideas. However, there are lots of plants or flowers that you can choose from! Knowing what your plants or flowers need is the key to a beautiful garden!
  1. Location
    • Picking an appropriate location to start your garden is the most important thing. If your garden’s location is in an area you see regularly, then you are more willing to spend more time and care for it compared to a location you rarely see. Also, be cautious of how much sun or shade your plants need. You do not want to have plants that require lots of sun in an area that is all shade.
  1. Providing Good Nutrients
    • Giving your plants the nutrients it needs is essential! Good quality soil and fertilizer is the way to go! A fine type of quality soil will include peat moss, compost, perlite, vermiculite or rotted manure.  Never use soil straight from the ground due to the fact that it can harden and not give the flowers or plants the nutrients it requires.
  1. Available Space
    • Many do not have the luxury of having lots of space to have a beautiful garden. Should this stop you from having one? Absolutely Not! Consider using containers. Many plants and vegetables can grow in pots. Just consider the size of the plants and vegetables and use the appropriate container for them.
  1. Mulch
    • Using mulch is useful for reducing weeds and moisture loss. In addition, it helps make your garden look aesthetically pleasing. Mulch is available in the colors red, brown, and black.
